THE WORKS

Four harnesses,
start to finish.

Each built as a whole — helm to sabaton — and each filmed as it left the bench.

I Mid 14th Century · Buhurt

Italian Mid-14th Century Harness

A complete Italian fighting harness of the mid-trecento: riveted brigandine over tempered plate, spoletto bascinet with riveted mail aventail, Tristan gauntlets, articulated arms, and a full leg harness. Every plate raised and hardened in this workshop, built whole to buhurt specification.

German Man at Arms Harness

A fifteenth-century German man at arms harness built around a brigandine core: fully articulated arms and legs, mitten gauntlets, every lame moving freely under load. Shown here piece by piece, then in the hands that made it.

Blackened Burgundian Harness

The blackened Burgundian — not to be confused with our other blackened Burgundian sets — offered as a model in three configurations. Worn, it carries gothic legs, gothic arms, and gothic gauntlets under a fourteenth-century helm after the Romance of Alexander. The fitting shows the cloth-covered rerebraces and cuisses — real plate beneath the yellow. And the covered cuirass stands on its own.

THE CRAFT

Nothing moves unless
we make it move.

Articulation, temper, and historical pattern — the three things you can't bolt on afterwards.

FROM THE FURNACE

Red heat, quench,
and the temper.

A spoleto goes the whole way: into the furnace, quenched, then tempered. The steel is hardened and drawn back to 38–40 HRC — hard enough to turn an axe, tough enough to flex and return instead of cracking. Every plate in a harness gets the full cycle, in-house.

EN9 carbon steel · Hardened & tempered · 38–40 HRC
See What We Make

Articulation

Shoulder lames riding freely through their full range — no binding, no gaps.

Pattern work

A transitional sallet after the effigy at St Peter’s, Sourton — XV century.

▶ FULL-FORCE TEST
PROOF

One tempered spoletto.
One two-handed axe.

No padding underneath and no camera cuts — a tempered helm on a post, taking repeated full-force overhead strikes from a two-handed axe. The axe gives up first. That is what the temper is for, and it's the same steel in every buhurt piece that leaves this workshop.
